Pioneering Public Health Frontiers

It has been an exhilarating week of international scientific exchange for our research group. From May 11th to 15th, 2026, members of our team had the distinct honour of travelling to Fudan University in Shanghai, on the invitation of Professor Dr. Zhijie Zhang. The trip aims to lay the groundwork for a highly impactful, cross-border partnership in public health analytics.

About

Bridging Methodological Expertise

Representing KAUST on this pivotal trip were Dr. Elias Krainski, an authority in spatio-temporal modelling and INLA methodology, alongside Dr. Haziq Jamil, an expert in statistical modelling and latent variable models. The intensive five-day agenda kicked off with deep dives into advanced geostatistics, exploring the analytical frontiers of disease mapping, risk profiling, and complex disease transmission mechanisms. A major focus of these collaborative sessions was leveraging the power of INLA to overcome modelling hurdles like preferential sampling and spatial barriers.

Sparking Innovation Through Shared Research

Throughout the week, our team engaged in vibrant knowledge-sharing sessions. A highlight of the visit was Dr. Jamil’s presentation on his cutting-edge work in the approximate Bayesian estimation of structural equation models. Showcasing this methodological advancement successfully served as a catalyst, sharing our group's recent progress and instigating dynamic conversations on novel avenues for our institutions to work together on complex data challenges.

Charting a Collaborative Future

The visit culminated in highly productive strategic planning. By week's end, Dr. Krainski, Dr. Jamil, and their Fudan counterparts had successfully crystallised follow-up steps for collaborative work, cementing a shared commitment to advancing the landscape of spatial epidemiology. We are thrilled by the momentum of this visit and look forward to the breakthrough global health solutions that will undoubtedly emerge from this exciting new partnership!
