Connect the Unconnected

KAUST research develops HAPS deployment guidance for hard-to-reach areas

In many remote regions, terrestrial infrastructure can only be installed near roads, coastlines, rivers or other accessible areas. This can leave large interior regions with limited or unreliable connectivity. Such gaps may affect not only mobile users, but also applications such as agricultural Internet of Things systems, renewable-energy facilities, environmental monitoring and emergency communications. Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Maynooth University have developed a mathematical framework to guide the deployment of high-altitude platform

About the Summit The Internet and Communication Technology (ICT) in bringing a revolution in almost all aspects of human life. As the fifth generation (5G) of wireless communication systems (WCSs) have extensively deployed worldwide, 6G is expected to be the next focus in wireless communication and networking and aim to provide new superior communication services to meet the future hyper-connectivity demands in the 2030s. The 6th KAUST 6G Summit promotes research and innovation in 6G technology, which has the potential to revolutionize industries like telecommunications, manufacturing

Digital roads in the sky: Stratospheric communication networks would connect the unconnected

Connectivity is a cornerstone of today’s world – but roughly one-third of the planet’s population isn’t linked up. Bridging that gap has proven challenging, because telecoms are hesitant to invest in the infrastructure to reach remote, sparsely populated areas. One solution is to lighten the load by moving communications infrastructure into the sky, where a network of flying platforms can link remote sites to satellites or terrestrial networks. But these high altitude platform stations (HAPS) technologies have applications and implications far beyond simply connecting rural communities. A HAPS
